A plant’s perception of daylight often determines the response to flowering and asexual growth. Short-day crops like cannabis naturally require about 12+ hours of continuous darkness to flower, and phytochrome photoreceptors begin to slowly deactivate before the plant is completely “asleep”.
Peak uptake of Phytochrome Pfr is specifically targeted to accelerate this process, reducing the 12-hour darkness requirement and allowing for more daily light accumulation and growth. Exact darkness requirements vary by crop and environment, but in general, 13 hours of daytime/11 hours of nighttime is achievable for an additional hour of growth per day.
This 730 nm far-red radiation will also generally induce stretching.
